Archived: Deputy Hit By Bow And Arrow
An incident involving a stolen vehicle ended with a deputy with an arrow in his arm.
Stearns County Sheriff Don Gudmundson says just after 10:00 a.m., a 31 year-old man from the Osakis/Alexandria area stole a truck in Osakis, which he drove to Sauk Centre to a John Deere store, crashing into the building. He then drove through several backyards and into parked cars before crashing into a garage on 10th Street. The suspect ran into the house through an unlocked door and appeared with a compound bow on the second floor. The bow belonged to the homeowner.
The suspect shot the bow and hit Stearns County Deputy Paul Orvis through the forearm. Officers shot at the suspect and hit him three times in the shoulder, buttocks, and his hand. Officers and a negotiator started talking to the man, where he told them his injuries.
After nearly two hours, the man appeared from the upstairs, where officers tasered him and took him into custody just before 1:00 p.m. He was taken by helicopter to a St. Cloud hospital for further treatment. Deputy Paul Orvis went into surgery to remove the shaft of the arrow and a possible broken arm. He is listed in good condition by the hospital.
Homes in the area of the incident were evacuated and Sauk Centre Schools went into lockdown.
The attack is still under investigation.
