Flint Dices, #6/7 SCSU Takes Kato Series with 8-2 Win

#6/7 St. Cloud State (14-3, 2-1 NSIC) rode a stellar outing from junior Blake Flint as they dispatched Minnesota State-Mankato (9-4, 1-2 NSIC) by a 8-2 final in the rubber game of their Northern Sun opener.

Flint (2-0) cruised through 7.0 innings of two-run ball, scattering 8 hits and a pair of walks while striking out 8. The Paradise Valley Community College transfer racked up 16 swinging strikes on 107 pitches.

SCSU struck first in the opening frame as Najee Gaskins (1-1, 2 BB, R, 2B, SB) doubled to lead off the game then scored on a Lenny Walker (2-3, 2 BB, 2 R, 2B, 3 RBI) single.

After Ty Denzer gave Kato’ the lead with a two-run second-inning single, Jordan Joseph (3-4, SF, R, 2B, 3 RBI, SB) led off the fourth with a double and scored on an Aaron Hammann single. The Huskies took a 3-2 lead in the fifth following an inning-opening double off Mitch Mallek’s (2-5, 3 R, 2B) bat and a sac fly by Joseph.

Walker made it a 5-2 game with a two-run double in the seventh, then scored the sixth run of the afternoon on a Toran Shahidi RBI base knock.

The final two Huskies runs scored in the ninth on a throwing error and a Jordan Joseph RBI single.

Shannon Ahern finished off the final two frames, allowing a single and striking out four.

St. Cloud State travels to Mauston, Wisconsin on Wednesday for a two-game midweek series with Winona State. Both games will be found on the KVSC Sports Stream with Thomas Breach on the call.
