Giese Shines, Butler Slams Door as #4 SCSU Sweeps Winona State 2-0

All-American lefthander Cal Giese fired 5.0 shutout innings in his second start off Ulnar Nerve surgery to earn his 17th collegiate win, his first since 2017, while leading #4 St. Cloud State (16-3, 4-1 NSIC) to a 2-0 shutout win over Winona State (8-8, 2-3 NSIC) in game two of Thursday’s midweek series.

Giese struck out five while scattering a pair of hits and two walks before reaching his pitch threshold. Matt Butler earned his second save of the year, firing 4.0 scoreless with two strikeouts and a lone hit allowed.

The Huskies struck first as Jordan Joseph scored on a passed ball in the second, then a Mitch Mallek moonshot to deep right made it a 2-0 game in the sixth.

SCSU opens a three-game weekend series at Sioux Falls on Saturday, with first pitch scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
