Archived: Huskies defeat Mankato, advance to NCAA Quarterfinals

The #12 Husky football team continues to make history this season. SCSU upset #1 Minnesota State at their home field, Saturday by a score of 54-48. With the victory over NSIC rival, Makato, the Huskies advance to the next round of the playoffs. SCSU also got to bring the traveling trophy, the training kit, back to St. Cloud.

Quarterback, Phil Klaphake threw for four touchdowns and two scores, leading the Huskies to victory. Klaphake finished the game with 144 rushing yards, completing 17 of 26 passes. Taylor Berger had six catches, a game high. Dan Brown made three catches and ran for two touchdowns.

The game ended in exciting fashion as Minnesota State possesed the ball with about thirty seconds remaining at their own 30-yard line. With just three seconds left the Mavericks sat on the 16-yard line and threw an incomplete pass to the end zone. The Huskies will advance to the quarterfinal found of the NCAA playoffs for the second time in school history. SCSU travels to Northwest Missouri State for a noon game Saturday. In school history SCSU had faces NMS once, it was a 41-0 Husky victory to open the 1988 season.
