St. Cloud State lost their third straight Battle of the Bone on UMD’s Military Appreciation Night as both defenses gave the offenses fits.

The game was scheduled for a 6 p.m. kickoff but due to lightning in the area the opening kickoff was moved back an hour to 7 p.m.

The Bulldogs would open up the game on offense with a deep shot down the field but a bad throw by Quarterback John Larson would end up in the hands of SCSU sophomore Payton Conrad and would give the Huskies their first offensive drive in Duluth Territory seconds into the game.

St. Cloud would settle for an Adam Stage Field Goal attempt but the try was tipped at the line and the game would remain scoreless.

UMD would open the scoring in the second after a scoreless opening quarter through the air with Larson connecting with Kurtis Weigand from 2-yards out.

Duluth would tack on a Field Goal from Dan Branger with just over three minutes remaing and would go into the half up 10-0.

Both offenses were looking to start off strong in the second half but would each go three and out twice until Zach Ojile would run it in from the one yard line and give the Bulldogs a three possession lead.

St. Cloud would finally get on the board with Dwayne Lawhorn finding Max Plunkett from six yards out and finally getting into the end zone late in the third quarter and cutting Duluth’s lead down to ten.

Duluth would add a Field Goal to open the 4th quarter and make it a thirteen point game.

The Huskies would rally late as Lawhorn found Tanner Tiege on a one yard slant with three minutes and 32 seconds left in the game.

SCSU’s defense would force a third down with a little over two minutes left but Larson would find Quincy Woods over the middle after two Huskies defenders had a chance to pick it off and that would seal St. Cloud State’s fate.

Dwayne Lawhorn would struggle through the air going 16-46 for 176 yards and two TD’s but throwing two interceptions as well.

The run game didn’t fair much better as Curtwan Evans led the ground attack for St. Cloud carrying the ball eight times for thirty yards. The longest run for the Huskies on the night was Dwayne Lawhorn for 12-yards.

St. Cloud States defense held the Bulldogs to just 234 yards and twenty points after UMD had combined for 100 points in their first two games.

The Huskies will return home next week for their homecoming game on Saturday, September 28th at 5 p.m. against Northern State University. Coverage begins at 4:45 p.m. on 88.1 fm KVSC with Hans Bristol and Sam Goetzinger on the call at Husky Stadium.
