Huskies Women’s Hockey Earn Conference Win over Mavericks

JAN. 18 – SCSU 3 MSU-Mankato 1 – HERB BROOKS NATIONAL HOCKEY CENTER
The St. Cloud State Huskies defeated Minnesota State – Mankato 3-1 Friady afternoon, earing big WCHA points in their first conference game of 2019. The contest was the fourth matchup of the 2018-19 regular season between the rivals including a game at the Minnesota Cup just after the New Year’s holiday hosted by the University of Minnesota.
Sophomore Laura Kluge slotted home her third goal of the season to put the Huskies up 1-0 in the first period taking a lead into the second period against the Mavericks.
Minnesota State would respond quickly in the 2nd period, as Rebekah Kolstad tied the game at 1 all. Kolstad continued her strong season for Minnesota State as the team’s leading points getter.
St. Cloud State needed crucial WCHA points jumping back into a difficult stretch of conference play. In the 3rd period, the Huskies came up huge.
The third period started with Julia Tylke scoring just five minutes into the period. Janna Haeg capped off the massive victory with a late goal on assists from Portrykus and Kluge to seal the win over rival MSU 3-1.
Tylke’s goal in the game adds onto her total points this year as the team leader for SCSU with now 9 goals and 9 assists for 18 points. Emma Polusny earned a win in goal after stopping 29 Maverick shots.
The road gets difficult for the Huskies travelling to Madison to battle the #1 ranked Badgers continuing WCHA play next weekend. Game 2 of the series against Minnesota State Mankato will be play on Tuesday night, February 5th at 6:07pm inside of the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.
