10-11-19 St. Cloud State 4 – RIT 1

Junior netminder Emma Polusny saw all but one in the third period, which was more than enough as the St. Cloud State women’s hockey team cruised to a 4-1 victory over RIT. The win is the Huskies first in NCAA play in the 2019-20 campaign.

Polusny saw 23 shots and stopped 22 (10-7-6). The lone marker for the RIT Tigers came from Abby Davies on the powerplay with only a second left in the middle period. Justine Larkin and Ellie Larson assisted on the play.

For the Huskies, senior Abby Thiessen opened the scoring just over halfway through the first period as a result of hard work from Laura Kluge (KLOO-ga) and Jenninna Nylund. Hallie Theodosopoulos netted the eventual game winner, her second of the year, with seven seconds left in the opening period. Klara Hymlarova and Rachel Herzog tallied assists on the goal.

Freshman Hymlarova buried her first collegiate goal in NCAA play 12 minutes into the second period on an unassisted goal at even strength before the Tigers made it 3-1 after two periods.

Theodosopoulos and Hymlarova weren’t done, however, as Theodosopoulos cashed in on an empty net with just under two minutes to play. Hymlarova finished with three points. Theodosopoulos finished with two points.

St. Cloud State fired 39 shots on goal (14-12-13) in the win but failed to convert on two powerplay chances. The Tigers went 1 for 4 on the night with the man advantage.

10-12-19 St. Cloud State 3 – RIT 0

In a game where the St. Cloud State women’s hockey team nearly doubled up in shots on the RIT Tigers, they also doubled their win total on the season. A 3-0 win off of Janine Alder’s fifth career shutout saw the Huskies improve to 2-2 in NCAA play (.500) in a Saturday afternoon matinee.

As the women’s hockey players took a visit to Niagara Falls after the game, they hope their momentum continues to roll like the Niagara water after a dominant road weekend.

Emma Bigham connected on a feed from Jenna Haeg just over six minutes into the first period for the eventual game winner, thanks to 24 saves on 24 shots (8-8-8) from senior captain Alder.

Early in the second period, freshman Olivia Cvar (SUH-var) potted her first collegiate goal of her young career off of Jenniina (YANEE-na) Nylund’s (NEW-lund) third assist of the season and senior Dana Rasmussen’s second assist of the year.

Nylund would tack on her second point of the game and her fourth assist of the year to find senior assistant captain Abby Thiessen for her third goal of the season. Laura Kluge (KLOO-ga) notched her second assist of the season on the play. The goal was the Huskies first powerplay goal of the year; the Huskies were 1 for 3 on the man advantage.

St. Cloud State threw 47 shots (17-16-14) on net in the game. The Tigers were 0 for 2 on the powerplay.

The Huskies look to carry momentum from the weekend and continue their road success as they travel to Ridder Arena to face the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers in a Saturday-Sunday match-up (Oct. 18-19). The match-up will be the second weekend series on WCHA play for St. Cloud State.
