Archived: Husky Men’s Hockey Completes Sweep of MSU

The SCSU men’s hockey team completed a sweep of Minnesota State Mankato with a 5-1 win Saturday night at the NHEC in St. Cloud. Junior Cory Thorson led the way for the Huskies with a pair of goals in the win.

The Huskies were coming off of a 5-1 win on Friday night, and both teams were scoreless after a penalty-marred first period.

Thorson broke the stalemate at the 2:44 mark of the second period with his second goal of the season on a wrist shot from the high slot. Assists on the goal were credited to Jarrod Rabey and Ethan Prow.

SCSU used a MSU penalty just ten seconds into the third to build momentum and ultimately blow the game open. Nic Dowd scored on a rebound just 27 seconds into the final trimester to give SCSU a 2-0 lead. Nick Jensen and Andrew Prochno were given assists on Dowd’s fourth goal of the season and third of the weekend. The tally turned out to be the game-winner, Dowd’s second of the season.

Just over 30 seconds later, Huskies captain Drew LeBlanc put home his third goal of the season, assisted by Kalle Kossila to give St. Cloud State the 3-0 lead.

Thorson scored his second goal of the game on a Husky power play at 14:24 of the third from Jensen and Dowd for a commanding four goal lead at 4-0.

SCSU sealed the game with a Kossila power play goal at 14:24 from Jimmy Murray and Taylor Johnson for the 5-0 lead.

The Mavs’ Evan Mosey spoiled Huskies goaltender Ryan Faragher’s shutout bid with under a minute remaining in the third period. The sophomore made 34 saves in the game to earn his third win of the season.

The Huskies are on the road next weekend for a series with George Gwozdecky’s Denver Pioneers. Follow KVSCHockey on Twitter for live updates throughout the games.
