Police are investigating an alleged assault on a candidate for the Minnesota House of Representatives.

Benton County Sheriff Troy Heck says candidate Shane Mekeland was at a restaurant in St. George just after 9 p.m. on Friday talking to a man about politics. Mekeland said the conversation was going well until the man took offense to something he said and punched Mekeland in the face without warning.

Police were not called until the next day and identified the suspect but made no arrests.

Mekeland has minor injuries but was not taken to the hospital.
