Archived: SCSU Women’s Hockey Ties Providence Saturday

The Huskies’ women’s hockey team stormed out to a 2-0 lead in the first period at Providence, then were stunned by a goal late in the third that forced them to settle for the tie.

Senior center Haylea Schmid got the Huskies on the scoreboard first with a power play goal at 7:47. Schmid’s first goal of the season was assisted by Molli Mott and Skye Kelly

Mott registered the Huskies’ second goal at 13:43 of the first period, assisted by senior Alex Nelson. The even-strength goal was Mott’s team-high second of the season.

Neither team scored in the second period with Providence outshooting SCSU 12-5 in the period and 26-10 through two.

The Friars got on the scoreboard at the 5:14 mark of the third period to cut the Huskies lead in half. Providence decided to pull their goalie for the extra attacker with just over a minute left in the third period and it paid dividends, as the Friars were able to score the equalizer with just 19 seconds left in regulation.

Neither team could manage a goal in the extra period despite the Huskies getting a power play for a portion of the extra time.

Providence outshot SCSU 41-20 in the game. Julie Friend was outstanding in net for the Huskies, recording 39 saves in the no-decision.

The same two teams play Sunday afternoon in Providence.
