The Men’s hockey team comes out of the weekend with the split against the last place University of Nebraska Omaha Mavericks.

Friday

Friday night was a dominating performance by the Huskies as they picked up the 4-1 victory in a game really highlighted by the special teams.

The Huskies were up 4-0 late in this one as they got goals from seniors Jack Ahcan and Nick Poehling, junior Easton Brodzinski and sophomore Micah Miller.

Junior David Hrenak was staring a shutout in the face when Martin Sundberg scored for Omaha with just 20 seconds left in the game.

Shots finished at 28-26 and faceoff at 37-29, both in favor of SCSU. The special teams of St. Cloud were on fire as the penalty kill shut it down pushing the Mavericks to a 0-5 day and the power play netted one goal on three tries.

Saturday

Saturday started with a tilted ice for the visitors as Omaha scored twice in the first four minutes and would head to the locker room for the first intermission leading the Huskies 3-1.

The Huskies battled back to put the score at 3-3 just over a minute into the third period. The goal scorers were from freshman Jami Krannila, sophomore Nick Perbix and junior Kevin Fitzgerald.

The game would make it all the way to overtime but not much farther as the Mavericks won the opening draw, entered the zone and Zach Jordan received an across the crease pass and netted the easy back door goal.

Shots were 32-27 and the faceoffs were 31-26, again, both in favor of the Huskies.

The loss sends the Huskies into the break sitting at 5-7-4 on the year and they will take two weeks off before heading to Minneapolis for the Mariucci Classic against the No. 1 Minnesota State Mavericks.

Tune in the 88.1 KVSC Dec. 28 and 29 for that holiday tournament with Andrew Erickson and Nick Maxon.
