Archived: Stearns County Sheriff’s Office Issues Reminder About Text-To-911 Feature

The Stearn’s County Sheriff’s Office issued a press release on Friday reminding people of the text-to-911 function.

Text-to-911 serves as a great option for those who are deaf or hard of hearing. It also serves as a safety plan and need to remain secretive, especially if you’re a victim of home invasion, domestic violence, and human trafficking.

However, the sheriff’s office warns that texting 911 should not the first option in an emergency situation. Emergency responses will take longer and dispatchers prefer calls due to being able to pick up on sound and vocal cues. If you can call, you are encouraged to do so.

In an emergency in which you’re using text-to-911, be sure to use simple and concise words without abbreviations or emojis. Text your exact location and what type of emergency you’re in and quickly answer dispatcher questions and follow their instructions.
