MAYWOOD TWP., Minn. — Two people were arrested on Dec. 21, after they attempted to steal from an abandoned building and fled from the police.

Around 9:45 a.m. on Sunday, the Benton County Sheriff’s Office received a call reporting suspicious activity in Maywood Township.

The caller told law enforcement that their security cameras showed two parked vehicles at the Oak Park Creamery and two people walking from the cars into an abandoned building nearby.

Upon arrival, the responding deputy, accompanied by his K-9 partner, noticed the two vehicles and saw flashlights illuminating the inside and outside of the abandoned building.

While the deputy was searching for the subjects, he heard the two vehicles start and then pursued one of the vehicles northbound on 165th Ave NE, and then westbound on Hwy 23.

A Foley police officer, who had been alerted of the pursuit, was watching for the arrival of the second vehicle on Hwy 23 near 13th Ave. Within minutes, the vehicle arrived in Foley and was stopped on 13th Ave.

The driver, 18-year-old Mason Kaul, of St. Cloud, was placed under arrest without incident and taken to Benton County Jail.

The other suspect, a 17-year-old juvenile, was later found at his residence and arrested. He was brought to a juvenile detention facility.

Both suspects are awaiting their first court appearances and are being held on charges of burglary, trespassing, and fleeing a police officer.
