A fire started in a garage early on Saturday, leading to the death of an Orrock Township woman.

The Sherburne County Sheriff’s Office says they received the report of a house fire north of Big Lake just before 4:30 a.m. When first responders arrived, house owner James Abfalter was safe outside, but couldn’t find his wife, 50-year-old Nikki Abfalter.

Firefighters were able to put out the flames and found the body of Nikki Abfalter in the garage. Authorities believe the Abfalters had noticed the fire and Nikki had been trying to move vehicles out of the garage. The cause of death was smoke inhalation and fire-related injuries.
