Archived: Women’s Hockey Nets Success in the Mountains

The women’s hockey team travelled to Colorado to play a pair of non-conference games in the Vail Tournament this weekend.

The Huskies were defeated by #8 Boston University 2-0 on Friday night. Both Boston goals were scored in the second period. Julie Friend recorded 31 saves in the loss.

SCSU rebounded on Saturday against Northeastern University and won by a score of 3-2. The game got going early as Cari Coen scored a power play goal at the 4:16 mark of the first period. Northeastern scored seven minutes later to even the field. Before the end of the period Skye Kelly notched her first goal of the season on the power play to regain the Huskies lead make the score 2-1. Northeastern knotted the game up again the the second period and the Huskies responded with a Julia Gilbert goal. Her goal was the eventual game-winner. Katie Fitzgerald had 25 saves in the contest and earned her first victory of the season.

St. Cloud State has the upcoming weekend off. They will resume play next weekend with a pair of non-conference games with RPI at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. Both games can be heard on the KVSC Sports Stream.
