Archived: High Rise Fire Training at SCSU this Week
If you see fire crews at St. Cloud State this week, chances are they’re just practicing. Every summer, the St. Cloud Fire Department spends three days pretending to fight fires on the top floors of SCSU’s tallest residence halls. This year’s high rise training is taking place Tuesday thru Thursday at Sherburne Hall, the tallest building on campus. St. Cloud Fire Chief Bill Mund says out of the 144 structure fires they responded to last year, only a few of them were on the third floor or higher. But, he says, this training is crucial because high rise firefighting requires a completely different strategy than ground level firefighting.
