Archived: Crews Remodeling 96-year-old SCSU Building

Warmer weather in Minnesota always means more orange around state roads and buildings. The south end of the St. Cloud State campus is the site of numerous construction projects this summer. Crews are currently remodeling the north wing of Shoemaker Hall. The purpose of renovating this 96-year-old structure is to make it more student-friendly.

"The lower level will be completely remodeled to be a combination of some office spaces, a main reception area, a gaming room, a student apartment, and also a TV viewing room," said John Frischmann, St. Cloud State Facilities Construction Coordinator.

Crews are also updating the electrical setup, as Shoemaker Hall simply didn’t have enough cable and internet hookups for the student of today. Crews are also improving the bathroom situation at Shoemaker.

"The old style of having one common restroom per floor, students these days are looking for more privacy than that, so we’re reconfiguring the bathrooms to be much more private than they were before, said Frischmann.

One of the most noticeable changes from the outside of the six story residence hall, is that there will be a new way to get inside.

"We’re adding a new entry tucked between Shoemaker North and Shoemaker West, so there will be a much more user-friendly, attractive entrance to the building," said Frischmann.

SCSU says work will continue thru the summer so that this August, hundreds of students can move in to their new home, a new-and-improved Shoemaker Hall.
