Archived: ‘Save SCSU’ Releases First Newsletter
A group of students, faculty, staff and citizens concerned about the decisions St. Cloud State has made in the face of the current budget crisis has released its first newsletter. The anonymous group, Save SCSU now has 262 supporters on facebook.
The December edition of Unimaginable SCSU is a two page newsletter highlighting what this group of critics believes to be mistakes made by SCSU administration in handling the university’s budget deficit. The newsletter says, “the administration has cut a lot of money from the SCSU budget… so much, they can now afford to rescind all of the layoff notices for retrenched faculty.”
It also says , “despite cutting the equivalent of a whole college worth of faculty positions and increasing enrollment, the administration insists class sizes will not increase, course offers will not decrease, and students will continue to graduate in a timely manner. How?
When the KVSC news department sent a Facebook message to Save SCSU asking for an interview, they wrote back saying they’d like to remain anonymous because they feared the administration will “react negatively against the programs and groups they are involved with."St. Cloud State President Earl Potter says, because of the anonymity, he doesn’t take this group seriously.
"It’s difficult to address an anonymous group of people who don’t frankly have the courage to look me in the eye and say what they’re thinking," said Potter.
In the newsletter, Save SCSU says they have taken advantage of every opportunity to participate in the university’s conversations about the budget. They are asking the university to rescind the 26 probationary faculty layoff notices and restore worthy programs.
