Archived: SPC Recommends Four Academic Programs Be Cut
The Strategic Planning Commitee has recommended that SCSU cut both the BS and minor Aviation programs, the General Biology BS program, and the Masters-level Geography program in a move to help balance the school’s budget.
St. Cloud State University President Earl Potter is expected to make a decision on the fate of the programs on Tuesday.
The school’s aviation program "did not present convincing evidence of strategic alignment of the University’s Strategic Action Plan, nor were they able to address concerns related to current and future costs of the program," according to the Committe report submitted September 23rd.
The aviation program did address the link between the program and the struggling St. Cloud Airport. However, the committee said in their report they cannot support asking St. Cloud State students to subsidize the program in order to support another public entity.
Geography also did not present convincing evidence of strategic alignment to the University’s Strategic Action Plan. "The program has three tracks, but together the overall enrollment is still small," the report stated.
The fourth program, General Biology, did not provide either a written document or open meeting testimony regarding their placement in the elimination category.
