Archived: Driver Killed in Collision with Train

A 58-year-old Sauk Rapids man is dead after police say he drove his car into the path of an oncoming train. It happened just before 8:00 pm Tuesday on the 1900 block of North Benton Drive in Sauk Rapids. Police say the man drove his car around the cross arms at the railroad crossing then purposely drove into the path of the oncoming eastbound train. The train and car collided, killing the driver of the car. Railroad personnel put out a fire that started as a result of the crash and a cleanup of the scene ensued. The train was able to leave the area early Wednesday morning.
