Archived: No Moratorium on Wind Energy Systems

The Stearns County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously against a moratorium on large wind energy systems on Monday. Commissioners instead voted to appoint a committee to re-evaluate Stearns County’s regulations regarding wind farms. The committee will be appointed at the next board meeting, scheduled for June 15th.

Concerns brought before the board were: turbine noise, shadow flicker, landing ability for emergency air transportation, bird impact, road damage and effect on property values. Proponents of the wind energy systems noted the potential boost in the economy, as well as the benefit of green energy.
The comments received from the public were enough to fill two large binders, with approximately equal numbers on each side of the issue.
