Archived: Thompson Sentenced to 34 Years in Prison

A Fairhaven Township man has been sentenced to 34-and-a-half years in prison for kidnapping and trying to kill his ex-wife almost two years ago. Stearns County Judge Vicki Landwehr sentenced 51-year-old Jerry Thompson after he was convicted of attempted murder, kidnapping, burglary, assault and violating an order for protection. On August 5th, 2008, Thompson went to his wife’s home in North Fairhaven Township, led her into a car at gunpoint and led law enforcement on a slow speed chase on Highway 55 until finally coming to a stop on County Road 44, just east of Kimball. Officers then approached Thompson at the stop and with the victim still in the car, shot the suspect. Thompson was injured and taken to the hospital. His ex-wife was not hurt. The judge cited aggravating factors in the case including committing the crimes in the presence of children, the use of a gun and the serious manner in which the crimes were committed. Thompson will be in prison for at least another 21 years. He will be 72 when he becomes eligible for release.
