Archived: SUV Goes Through Ice, Three Escape Safely

Three people were able to escape from a 2003 Chevy Trailblazer just before it went through the ice on Big Lake at about 5:30 p.m. on Sunday. According to Sheriff Joel Brott, 46 year-old Natalie Muering of Albertville, 45 year-old Steven Bergquist of Big Lake and his 12 year-old son were about 100 yards out from the North shoreline on seven inches of ice traveling to their fish house.

The rear end of the vehicle broke though and became partially submerged. All three crawled from open windows of the SUV onto the ice surface. Minutes later, the vehicle broke completely through and fell to the bottom of the lake in 25 feet of water. No one was injured and efforts to remove the vehicle were underway on Monday.
