BCA Investigating The Use of Force High Speed Chase

The Department of Public Safety Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) is investigating an officer’s use of force during a high speed chase.

The BCA says that, on Tuesday afternoon, deputies from the Todd County Sheriff’s office got into a high speed chase in Morrison County after they tried to pull over a driver who did not pull over. The driver shot at law enforcement during the chase; no one was injured.

The driver eventually lost control of the vehicle and went into the ditch striking a tree just off County Road 16 and Highway 10 in Cushing. Officer’s asked the driver to step out of the vehicle, but he did not exit, leading the officers to fire bean bag rounds to knock out the vehicles back window and then they fired chemical rounds into the back seat.

As the officers approached the vehicle they found the driver with a gunshot wound to the head. The driver was taken to North Memorial Health Hospital in Robbinsdale where he is being treated for a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The BCA says that no officers were wearing body cameras. They will look into whether squad cameras captured any of the incident on camera. They also found a handgun inside of the vehicle.
