Archived: Beware of Tomato Plant Disease

As summer finally gets the ball rolling, plants begin to bear fruit. With all living things comes disease and with tomato season just around the corner it’s good to beware of tell-tale signs. ‘Early Blight’ and ‘Septoria Leaf Spot’ are two common tomato diseases. Early Blight infects the leaves, stems and fruit and is seen as brown spots surrounded by yellow tissue. Septoria Leaf Spot primarily infects the leaves which will turn yellow, then brown and fall off of the plant as the disease works upwards from the ground. Both diseases are very easily spread by fungal spores and can infect tomato plants from year to year. Prevention is possible and please use caution when applying herbicides.
