Archived: BREAKING: College of St. Benedict Renames Petters Auditorium
Less than a week after Tom Petters was convicted of facilitating a $3 billion Ponzi scheme, the College of St. Benedict is changing the name of the Petters Auditorium at the Benedicta Arts Center. It will now be called the Escher Auditorium, in honor of Sister Firmin Escher, a longtime member of the St. Benedict’s Monastery who passed away in June. Escher was a central figure in the development and construction of the auditorium, which opened in 1964.
Petters donated $3 million to the College of St. Benedict in 2003, which led to the auditorium being named after his parents, Fred and Rosemary. The college says it made this decision in consultation with Petters’ parents, who are “cherished friends of the college.”
