It was announced in a meeting with the student athletes today that St. Cloud State University is shutting down the football program and both of the golf teams beginning in the Fall of 2020.

This is the second round of cuts in the last 4 years, but this time an addition comes as Men’s Soccer is added to comply with Title IX regulations.

“This was an extremely difficult decision that will have an impact on our dedicated student-athletes, our dedicated coaches, and the passionate alumni and supporters who have followed our programs throughout their proud histories,” University President Robbyn R. Wacker

The cuts are tied to a Title IX lawsuit that states SCSU hasn’t been compliant since 2014.

Football has a history at SCSU dating back to 1895. The program has 98 male athletes this year. Meanwhile the golf teams each had eight athletes. These athletes now need to decide if they want to transfer to continue playing or stay and not play in collegiate sports.

The Athletics Department will begin a strategic plan for the future this spring that will include the exploration of a sponsored eSports Club.
