Archived: City Hall Lockdown Ends with No Suspects Found

The search for an intruder that locked down St. Cloud’s City Hall has ended–with no one located. Police left the scene around 3p.m. Wednesday afternoon. It all started around 10 a.m., when St. Cloud’s City Hall was evacuated while police searched the building for a possible burglary suspect.  St. Cloud Mayor Dave Kleis says there have been two break-ins at City Hall recently in which some equipment and food was taken and two safes were tampered with.

Kleis says about 80 people in the building were evacuated when an employee spotted a man with a blanket near the ventilation system in a remote area of City Hall. The man ran from the building. The employee heard more noise coming from the vents. The employees were first taken to a third floor conference room then later they all moved two blocks away to the St. Cloud Civic Center. Police Lieutenant Jerry Edblad says the search of the ventilation system was being conducted slowly and methodically and took a while because the old building has a lot of crawl space.

The building is locked for the rest of Wednesday and will open for business at 8a.m. Thursday.
