The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office has identified a 50-year-old man who drowned Friday in Knaus Lake in Wakefield Township.

Authorities say Barry Ray Schramel of Cold Spring was swimming just after 5 p.m. He tried to retrieve an inflatable toy that had floated away. He was swimming back to the island when the wave from a passing boat struck him, and witnesses say he appeared to swallow water.

As he continued to swim back to shore the wake of a second watercraft struck him and he went under water. A lot of boats and people in the area at the time tried searching for Schramel, which was about 30 yards from the main island and near a sandbar.

When the searchers found him in about six feet of water he had been underwater for about 20 minutes. First responders tried life saving measures and got a pulse, and the Life Link helicopter was used, but he was later pronounced dead at the St. Cloud Hospital.
