Archived: Driver Killed in Vehicle Fire

A driver in Benton County has perished in a vehicle fire that occurred after a collision with a garbage truck. The accident occurred just before 8:30 a.m. Wednesday at the junction of County Roads 5 and 7. Immediately after the collision, the second vehicle, a full-size van, caught fire. The responding Benton County Sherriff’s Deputy and another motorist attempted to rescue the van driver from the wreckage, but were unable to do so because of the fire. The driver of the garbage truck, 43-year-old Kurt Bursch of Foley, was taken to the St. Cloud Hospital and received treatment for minor injuries. The driver of the van was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. The identity of the driver will be released pending an autopsy, and the accident is still under investigation.
