Archived: Flooding May Cause Septic System Damage
Stearns County officials are reporting many homes in the county suffered flood damage from recent rainfall, which may have affected septic systems. Potential damage exists for septic systems and should not be used when covered with floodwater. Precautionary steps such as pumping the tanks after flood water recedes, checking electrical connections for damage before turning electricity back on, locating and protecting drainfield by keeping traffic off the area, checking the septic tank manhole cover, check and repair vegetation over tank and drainfield, thoroughly disenfect inside of home if sewage backed up, and minimizing household water use can be taken to reduce septic system damage. If homeowners are concerned they can contact their local septic system permitting authority.
