Archived: Football Wins Home Opener over #17 Winona

After starting the season the road for two games, the St. Cloud State football team was happy to be home this weekend and did not disappoint the Husky faithful. SCSU won their home opener 31-26 over #17 Winona State on Saturday at Husky Stadium.

In front of a loud crowd of 4,106 fans, the Huskies took on Winona State for the first time in 28 years and upset the Warriors in a game that saw multiple lead changes. The game started with first year quarterback Phillip Klaphake finding his favorite receiver in Fred Williams for a 54-yard strike to put St. Cloud on the board first. Klaphake threw for 205 yards and two touchdowns.

The Huskies fell behind 14-10 early, but battled back with strong defense and took a commanding 31-17 lead off an interception return for a touchdown by junior Josh Everson. St. Cloud held off the Warriors late in the game and held on for the victory.

With the win, the Huskies move to 2-1 and 2-0 in the NSIC. St. Cloud State will play the University of Mary on Saturday at Husky Stadium in a game you can hear right here on KVSC. Kickoff is slated for 5 PM, pre-game starts at 4:40.
