Archived: Granite City Crossing Opening

The anticipation is building as drivers, bikers and walkers in St. Cloud are excited for the opening of Granite City Crossing—the new bridge spanning the Mississippi River on Highway 23. The bridge opens at 10 a.m. Thursday.  Minnesota Department of Transportation officials are touting the new bridge as having greater safety and mobility.

The work on the bridge began a year ago on the $19.2 million bridge. In addition to the new bridge, MnDOT, in partnership with the city of St. Cloud, began the $13 million construction project along Highway 23 from Washington Memorial Drive to 4th Avenue. The westbound ramp at 9th Avenue will remain closed until November 1. The signals at 9th Avenue will be activated at the end of this week. Motorists will see construction activity through mid-November as crews work on the Cloverleaf parking lot, Riverside Drive and the pedestrian trail at the east end of the bridge.

A celebration event is planned for Thursday from 4:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Kelly Inn and Green Mill parking log. The event, called Division Revision, features local bands, food, games and inflatables for the kids…as well as prizes for best costumes and fireworks at 7 p.m. In event of rain, the party moves inside the Kelly Inn.
