A car crash on Wednesday is still under investigation by the Benton County Sheriff’s Office.

The Benton County Sheriff’s Office says at about 9:30 P.M. on Wednesday, a pickup truck and a car struck each other head-on near the 800 block of 35^th Street Northeast in Sauk Rapids. The driver of the truck, 57-year-old Lonnie Wayne Noponen of Sartell, crossed over the venter line and collided with the car being driven by a 16-year-old girl from Rice.

Both drivers had to be extricated from their vehicles by the Sauk Rapids Fire Department and were taken to the St. Cloud Hospital by ambulance. Both drivers suffered serious injuries.

Investigating deputies collected the phones of the drivers to see if distracted driving was a factor in the accident. Deputies also found several prescription medications in Noponen’s truck and have obtained a search warrant to draw blood from Noponen.
