The St. Cloud State Huskies season came to an end Saturday afternoon in Duluth. In a closely contested battle, the Bulldogs of Minnesota Duluth edged the Huskies 20-17 in overtime.

The Huskies had a 17-14 advantage with less than two minutes to play in the fourth quarter, but failed to convert on a third down play, giving the ball back to Duluth. UMD drove down the field and kicked a game-tying field goal to send the game into overtime. The Huskies got off to a fast start in the first quarter, scoring on a 1 yard touchdown run by running back Dante Steward. St. Cloud had two other chances early in the game to break the game open, but Tyler Aldridge missed a field goal, and also had an attempt blocked. The Huskies also had a touchdown called back on a holding penalty. This kept the Bulldogs in the game and UMD quarterback Chase Vogler scored on a 31 yard touchdown run to tie the game at seven in the second quarter. The game went into halftime tied at seven.

In the third quarter Bulldogs running back Brian Hanson scored on a 13 yard touchdown run to give UMD a 14-7 lead heading into the fourth quarter. The Huskies responded by adding a 40 yard field goal by Aldridge to make it 14-10. The Huskies defense played stellar all afternoon, and prevented the Bulldogs from putting the game out of reach. Huskies quarterback Philip Klaphake made a leaping 2 yard touchdown run with 6:32 remaining in the fourth quarter, to give the Huskies a 17-14 lead.
UMD was driving late in the fourth quarter, when wide receiver D.J. Winfield threw an interception on a trick play attempt for the Bulldogs. Marvin Matthews made the interception in the end zone with less than three minutes to play in the game. The Huskies were forced to punt, and UMD tied the score on a 19 yard field goal by kicker David Nadeau.

Duluth got the ball first in overtime, and was unable to put anything together on offense. The Huskies defense once again came up big and held the Bulldogs to a 24 yard field goal by Nadeau. The Huskies then took over on offense knowing a touchdown would send them to the Super Regional 3 championship. St. Cloud was unable to get anything on offense and lined up for a 34 yard field goal attempt into a stiff breeze. Aldridge missed a game-tying field goal and the Huskies lost in heartbreaking fashion.

The game was dominated by great defense from both teams, as neither offense was able to put up big points. Philip Klaphake threw for 176 yards and ran for 40, far below his season averages. Dante Steward had 77 yards rushing on 20 attempts, and Fred Williams had 94 yards receiving on 6 catches. Special teams were a disappointment all day for the Huskies as they had one field goal, and two punts blocked in the game. It was a great effort by the Huskies on the road against the number one ranked Bulldogs. St. Cloud State finished the season with a 10-3 record, tying the school record for most wins in a season.
