Archived: Huskie’s Smith Named Pre-Season D-II Baseball Player of Year

The season is less than two weeks away and the hype for the St. Cloud State Baseball team continues to build. Coming off a record setting season 41 win season, the squad will take the field on February 12 with who is believed to be the nation’s best Division II baseball playe on their roster.
Sophomore third baseman and outfield Jordan Smith was named the 2011 Division II Pre-Season Player of the Year by Baseball America on Tuesday. Additionally Smith was also given the nod on Baseball America’s Division II Pre-Season All-American team.
During his freshman season Smith started all 58 games and hit for a .457 average with 15 homerun and 78 runs-batted-in and earned Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Freshman of the Year honors. Over the summer Smith spent the season with his hometown Willmar Stingers of the Northwoods League and hit .374 and will move up to the prestigious Cape Cod League playing for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox this summer.
