Archived: Huskies Unbeaten Streak Snapped against Minnesota State

St. Cloud State was riding a six-game win streak; Minnesota State hadn’t won in six games and was going into a tough road matchup against the Huskies. On paper, this series looked to be tilting SCSU’s way but Husky fans were harshly reminded that in the WCHA, nothing is guaranteed as the Huskies tied MSU on Friday 3-3 then were blown out Saturday 6-2.

Friday night saw a great hockey game as both teams went back and forth on the scoreboard. Leading scorer Drew LeBlanc opened up the scoring for SCSU in the first period and after a Maverick goal, St. Cloud’s Jared Festler lit the lamp to make it 2-1 after one period of play. Garrett Roe picked up his 105th career assist on the goal, putting him in first place on the all-time assist chart in SCSU hockey history. Two goals by Minnesota State and another goal by LeBlanc made it a 3-3 game and that’s how it would end.

Saturday it was all Mavericks as SCSU was blown out 6-2 in front of just under six-thousand fans at the National Hockey Center. The Huskies saw their seven game unbeaten streak snap as the Mavericks led 4-0 after two periods. SCSU got goals from Aaron Marvin (his first since November 6th) and Cam Reid but it wasn’t enough. Maverick netminder Phil Cook made 29 saves in the victory as MSU moved to 5-11-4 in the WCHA.

SCSU is now 11-12-3 overall and 7-9-2 in conference play. The Huskies will hit the road this weekend to take on 15th ranked Nebraska-Omaha. For updates on that series check out KVSC hockey’s twitter page at twitter.com/kvschockey.
