Archived: Huskies Win Season Opener

The St. Cloud State baseball team started their season off on the right foot Sunday with a 10-5 victory over Arkansas Tech in Russellville, Arkansas.

The Huskies wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard as Brian Hansen scored the first run of the 2011 season courtesy of an RBI double by Kent Koch. Arkansas Tech stormed back for three runs in the bottom of the frame but SCSU would claw their way back and re-take the lead in the fifth on a Joey Benke RBI triple.

Division Two Preseason Player of the Year Jordan Smith went 2-for-4 from the plate for the Huskies and Benke went 1-for-1 with a triple and four walks. Kyle Fischer was the pitcher of record for St. Cloud, going five innings in relief of starter Logan Birr.

SCSU will finish off their three-game set with Arkansas Tech with a doubleheader today. Follow KVSC Sports on twitter for final scores from today’s games at twitter.com/kvscsports.
