Archived: Husky Baseball Splits Two With MSU

The #8 SCSU baseball team split a pair of home games with #11 MSU-Mankato at Joe Faber field on Saturday. The Huskies dropped game one 5-2 (box) and won game two 11-3 (box).

MSU got off to a hot start against Husky starter Scott Lieser (6-4) in game one. Centerfielder Lucas Skejefte was hit by the first pitch of the game, followed by a Matt Kuchenbecker double down the left-field line to give the Mavs runners on second and third base with no outs.

Patrick Dockendorf cleared the bases with a three run home run to right-center field, giving Minnesota State a lead they would never relent.

The Huskies scratched across a run in each of the first and second innings including a first inning solo blast by Joey Benke that went across the street and into a nearby construction site. The home run was estimated to have travelled 415 in the air and nearly 500 feet on the roll.

Minnesota State starter Harvey Martin ran his record to 7-0 on the season with six strong innings of work. Nick Sutherland worked the seventh for his sixth save of the season.

The Huskies offense broke out in game two, putting up 11 runs on an excellent Mavericks pitching staff. SCSU scored two runs in the first inning, four in the second and five in the third to take an 11-2 lead after three innings.

All nine Huskies in the starting lineup had at least one hit, and five Huskies had a pair of hits in the game.

Logan Birr kept his perfect record intact with 7 and two-thirds innings of work. Birr allowed 14 baserunners but worked his way out of the jams and protected the Huskies massive lead deep into the game.

With the split, the Huskies remain three games behind MSU for first place in the NSIC.

Sunday’s games were rained out and scheduled to be made up on Monday, April 16th.
