Archived: Husky Softball Swept at UMD

The Huskies softball team’s losing streak reached ten games on Saturday after being swept by the University of Minnesota-Duluth in Duluth, MN.

The Huskies dropped game one 4-1 (box) after the Bulldogs scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning and the Huskies bats fell silent. Kendra Merritt took the loss for the Huskies and fell below .500 on the season (10-11).

The Bulldogs again used early runs to defeat the Huskies in game two, scoring a run in the first and two in the second for a quick 3-0 lead. The Bulldogs held on to win 6-2 (box).

Huskies head coach Paula U’ren sympathized with her team’s struggles on Saturday. “In the first inning our pitcher was given no zone and the walks were a result of that. I give Merritt and our defense credit for battling all day against things they couldn’t control," U’ren said.

On game two, U’ren noted “Mikayla Hogan put a great swing on the ball and that should have been a two run homerun, but was taken away for a ground rule double, although it was a line drive over the fence from our angle.”

The Huskies losses put their record at 18-26 overall and 4-14 in the NSIC.  The team was scheduled to play at Bemidji State Sunday but was in a rain delay at the time of publishing this story.
