Archived: Liberty Derrick Demonstrations at Quarry Park Sunday

The 100-year-old wooden Liberty Derrick will be in operation on Sunday, June 12 at the Quarry Park and Nature Reserve. The public can view demonstrations at 1:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m., and 3:00 p.m. and is part of Waite Park’s weekend city festival. Derricks were used to lift giant blocks of granite from the bottom of quarry floors to loading docks at the surface of quarries. The 10-ton capacity Liberty Derrick has not been used in more than 50 years by a granite company at the quarries. Parking is free at the park and the best viewing sights will be at Quarries 17 and 18, just south of the parking lot.
