Archived: Lumberjacks a Win Away From Trip to Chicago

The St. Cloud State Men’s Hockey team might not be making a trip to the Frozen Four this year, but Central Minnesota’s junior hockey league team is only one win away from advancing to the final four of it’s league. The Granite City Lumberjacks beat the North Iowa Bulls last night 2-1 in overtime to a take a 1-0 series lead in the West Division Championship series. If the Jacks win at 7:30 tonight, they take the best of three series and advance to the NA3HL Cup Tournament next weekend in Chicago.

Granite City got goals from Trevor Ness on the powerplay earlier in the third period, and Riley Bengtson scored the game winner in the overtime period on a rebound in front. Matt Grove made several fantastic saves in the goal for the Jacks.

Game two of the series is tonight at Sports Arena East in Sauk Rapids. If a game three is needed, it will take place at 5 pm on Sunday.
