Archived: Men’s Hockey Falls Saturday, Ties Sunday at #19 UNO

The St. Cloud State Men’s Hockey team played well on the road in Omaha against the #19 UNO Mavericks this weekend, but came home with only one point, after falling 4-3 on Saturday and skating to a 2-2 tie on Sunday.

Saturday’s game saw Cory Thorson get the Huskies on the board with a first period goal, but the Mavericks rattled off two straight goals to take the lead. Junior captain Ben Hanowski responded for SCSU with one of the most impressive goals of the season and notched his ninth tally of the year after a series of dekes and dangles to tie the game 2-2. After an Alex Hudson tally late in period two, Cam Reid evened the score in the third period. However, it was the Mavericks who tallied last as Terry Broadhurst scored with under three minutes to play to give UNO a 4-3 win.

After a quick turnaround, the Huskies were back on the ice Sunday afternoon and in front of a small crowd got goals from Brooks Bertsch and Hanowski in a 2-2 tie. Ryan Faragher made 24 saves in the draw.

St. Cloud State is now 6-7-3 overall, and 4-4-2 in the WCHA, which is good for seventh in the league. The Huskies are back home this weekend with a home series against Bemidji State. Puck drop is slated for 7:37 pm Friday and 7:07 Saturday. Our own Zack Fisch and Dave Overlund will have the call.
