Archived: Men’s Hockey Spilts with Badgers

If there was ever a series where the scores wouldn’t tell you the whole story, the Huskies-Badgers match-up would have fit that bill. Saint Cloud State spilt with the Wisconsin Badgers this last weekend with a 4-1 win on Friday and then a 4-1 loss on Saturday. Although three goals separated the teams each night, the games were close throughout.

Saint Cloud held a 2-1 advantage on Friday all the way until the final minute, until an empty net goal by Garrett Roe and a break away score by Ryan Lasch landed the final score of 4-1. The Badgers reversed the trend with holding a 2-1 lead into the 3rd period on Saturday and netting two goals mid-way through the frame to take the 4-1 win.

There were positives and negatives on the weekend for Saint Cloud as they picked up their first Friday victory of the season and gained another two points on a ranked opponent. The Huskies also saw a strong series by Mike Lee, who allowed one goal on 39 shots while gaining his first WCHA victory of the year. Saint Cloud also got production by Ryan Lasch who scored two goals on Friday moving him into the top five on the Saint Cloud State all-time points list. David Eddy also recorded his first goal of his college career on Saturday as well.

With the success, came some failures including being shutout both nights (33-19 on Saturday), just one for ten on the power play and being outworked on the defensive end in both nights.

The spilt lands the Huskies record at 5-5-2 overall, with a 4-3-1 mark in the conference. Up next for the Huskies is the team tied for 1st in the WCHA and ranked 2nd in the nation, Denver University. The Huskies and Pioneers drop the puck Friday and Saturday night in more WCHA action.
