Archived: Men’s Hockey Splits Series with Minnesota State

Another weekend on the road resulted in another split for the St. Cloud State Men’s Hockey team. The squad took the ice in Mankato against WCHA foe Minnesota State and dropped Friday’s game 4-2, but came back and won Saturday by a score of 3-2.

Friday’s game saw the Huskies strike first. Without Captain Drew LeBlanc, the top line saw first-year Brooks Bertsch added to the mix, and he didn’t disappoint notching his first collegiate goal to give SCSU a 1-0 in the first period. After that, MSU rattled off three straight goals, including one SCSU’s Ben Hanowski accidentally knocked into his own net. St. Cloud’s Cory Thorson scored 54 seconds into the third period to cut MSU’s lead to 3-2, but Cameron Cooper scored for the Mavericks minutes later to give Mankato the 4-2 win.

After Friday’s result, the Huskies came out flying on Saturday and scored twice in the game’s first two minutes. Thorson notched his second of the weekend on a deflection just 1:19 into the game. Seconds later, Hanowski tallied his seventh goal of the season at the 1:48 mark. David Eddy also scored in the first period, and goalie Ryan Faragher stood tall stopping 29 shots as SCSU earned a split with the 3-2 victory.

St. Cloud now stands at 5-5-2 on the season and 3-2-1 in the WCHA. This weekend the Huskies take on the #1 Minnesota Golden Gophers in a home & home series. Friday’s game will take place at the National Hockey Center with a 7:37 puckdrop, and Saturday’s game will be in Minneapolis at Mariucci Arena with a 7:07 game time.

KVSC will have the call for both games, as Zack Fisch, Dave Overlund and Matt Bishop call the shots. We’ll be on the air thirty minutes prior with Pre-Game coverage. For updates throughout the week on Husky Hockey, log on to Twitter and follow @KVSCHockey.
