Archived: Men’s Hockey Swept by UNO

Just when things were looking up for the St. Cloud State Men’s hockey team, the tides have taken a turn for the worse. Two weeks ago the squad was the hottest team in the country riding a six game win streak. Today they sit winless in their last four and losers of three straight after getting swept by the #18 Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks. The Huskies dropped a 3-0 decision Friday and a 4-3 game on Saturday at Qwest Center in Omaha.

FRIDAY-UNO 3, SCSU 0
Friday saw St. Cloud State fall apart in the second period allowing three goals to the Mavericks in a span of 1:40. SCSU had their share of opportunities firing 33 shots on UNO goalie John Faulkner but he was perfect, earning his sixth shutout of the season. Mike Lee made 26 saves for St. Cloud in the loss.

SATURDAY- UNO 4, SCSU 3
The Huskies took the ice Saturday with vengeance and quickly regained their scoring touch. Given a five minute major powerplay, David Eddy opened the scoring for St. Cloud State with the extra skater to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead. Eddy wouldn’t be finished as he added an assist on Garrett Roe’s tally just over halfway through the period. The period finished with Drew LeBlanc deflecting a Taylor Johnson shot in for the goal to put SCSU up 3-0 after the first frame.

The Mavericks added a second period goal to cut the deficit to only two, and in the third period the wheels came off for the Huskies again. Lee faced 55 shots on the night and the SCSU goalie did all he could, but couldn’t stop the barrage. The Mavericks scored three goals in just under four minutes midway through the period to turn the tables on the Huskies and went on to win 4-3.

With the loss St. Cloud falls to 11-13-3 and drops to ninth place in the WCHA. St. Cloud returns to action this weekend in Duluth against the #3 UMD Bulldogs. For updates on these games follow us on Twitter.
