ST. CLOUD, Minn. — A police pursuit on University Drive near the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center ended with a fatal crash and power outage on Monday, Nov. 17.

According to the St. Cloud Police Department, an officer was on a routine patrol around 10:41 p.m. when he saw a vehicle driving westbound on University Drive near Killian Boulevard.

The officer’s radar indicated the vehicle was driving at 62 mph in a 30 mph zone. The officer attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but the driver refused to stop and accelerated.

The officer pursued the vehicle, driven by a 41-year-old man from St. Cloud. The driver continued on University Drive, crossing the University Bridge at a high rate of speed.

The suspect went through the roundabout at 5th Avenue and collided with a parked truck, which was occupied by a 53-year-old man from St. Cloud. The occupant was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Despite life-saving measures, the driver was pronounced dead at the scene, according to SCPD.

Officials say the driver’s driving status was cancelled due to past driving conduct, but the reason he fled remains under investigation.

A light pole and power lines were damage as a result of the crash. The intersection was temporarily closed to allow Excel Energy to repair the damage.

Residents nearby were affected by a power outage around the time of the crash, and then again around 2:15 a.m. according to Excel Energy’s outage map.

The case remains under active investigation.
