Archived: Precious Waters Canoe Flotilla To Present Sulfide Mining Information Saturday

The Precious Waters Canoe Flotilla will be at the Good Earth Food Co-op in St. Cloud Saturday Oct. 13. The group aims to raise awareness about the proposed sulfide mine in north eastern Minnesota.

"Copper-nickel sulfide mining is an entirely different story than the traditional Taconite mining of Minnesota." Elli King, a flotilla member said. "This new type of mining has never been done before in Minnesota, and everywhere that it has been done, in similar bio-regions to ours, the watersheds have suffered significant pollution."

The flotilla will be in the community room of the co-op at 6 p.m. to present information and have open discussions with community members.

St. Cloud is one of the stops on the 30-day canoe trip that started at the proposed PolyMet mine location north east of Hoyt Lakes on September 21. The trip will commence on October 22nd with a rally and march to the state capitol in St. Paul.
