Come 2013, it will be goodbye WCHA and hello NCHC. As the framework of college hockey continues to be shaken, this time it is St. Cloud State making rumblings. Per multiple reports, St. Cloud State University, along with Western Michigan, has been invited to the newly formed college hockey ‘Super-Conference’ known as the National Collegiate Hockey Conference. Per reports, both teams are expected to be added to the league by the end of the week.

The invitation for St. Cloud State to the NCHC is more than significant. Many in the community voiced concerns in regards to how the Huskies would remain prominent a national program on levels such as attendance and recruiting with the likes of conference rivals such as North Dakota, Minnesota Duluth, and others not regularly visiting National Hockey Center. Rumors have had St. Cloud State as being said to be pushing to get into the NCHC over the past month

In mid-July, the formation of the NCHC was announced, and St. Cloud State University was not originally invited to the powerhouse conference with the likes of its current WCHA rivals in North Dakota, Minnesota Duluth, Denver, Colorado College, and Nebraska Omaha. With first the Big 10 Hockey Conference being formed and Minnesota and Wisconsin leaving the WCHA to join there, then this move, the WCHA at the time was left with only 5 remaining teams including St. Cloud State for the 2013-14 seasons when the conferences realign.

Following the formation of the NCHC in July, President Earl Potter was quoted in the St. Cloud Times as saying, “We expected to be in conversations about being in a new league..But as we looked at it … we intended to say ‘no.’

Potter confirmed SCSU was originally not invited to the conference but quickly modified his original statement in a message to the Center Ice Club saying, "…know that we are working diligently to assure that Husky Hockey remains a leader on the national level.”

We are expecting more information from St. Cloud State University in regards to an official announcement of this news last today. An anticipated press conference will likely be held tomorrow at Coborn Plaza. KVSC will have live coverage of any press conference that is held.
