Archived: SCSU Baseball Falls to Winona; Season Ends

After a multitude of delays and a rainy weekend, the St. Cloud State baseball team saw their season end at the hand of the Winona State Warriors in the NCAA Central Region Tournament.

Bad weather was the theme this past weekend as games for all teams involved had to be shifted and SCSU and Winona State didn’t start until close to 10 p.m. Sunday night. The Huskies, who had lost to Minnesota State earlier in the tournament needed to win against Winona to stay alive.

The Huskies, who were technically the visiting team in this contest, jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning but couldn’t hold on. Winona knocked SCSU starter Nick Anderson out of the game in the second inning as they held a 5-2 lead. St. Cloud would battle back as the game went to extra innings but in the bottom of the tenth it was Winona who took advantage of an SCSU mistake. With the bases loaded, Husky pitcher Ryne Schwenke walked in the winning run and the season was over for SCSU. It was a tough finish at 1:30 a.m. Monday morning for the Huskies.

The loss ends a historic season for St. Cloud State. The Huskies set a team record for wins as they finished with a record of 43 wins and 11 losses.
